“Fill your life with women that empower you, that help you believe in your magic and aid them to believe in their own exceptional power and their incredible magic too. Women that believe in each other can survive anything. Women who believe in each other create armies that will win kingdoms and wars.” — Nikita Gill
8 March 2019 — On March 8th, International Women’s Day ( #IWD2019 ), Women in AI in the Netherlands organized a unique event — WaiTIME “The Underestimated Power of a Woman in AI”. We didn’t dive too deep into the future of tech or biases, we shared something more powerful — the stories of women from across Europe who started their own businesses in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
The role-models, the dreamers, and the doers — Christina Calje (USA / Netherlands), Diana Xhumari (Albania), Una Verhoeven (Serbia / Netherlands), Wendy Geeraert (Belgium), and Fadoa Schurer (Netherlands). The am-AI-zing women who dared to bring their ideas to live, didn’t get scared of so many challenges faced, and didn’t stop moving forward. They are the creators of award-winning and industry-recognized startups — Autheos, Tegeria, AmpleEdge, Co-libry, Enginity, and Embot.ai. The moderator of the panel discussion was one of the Netherlands top 400 influential women under 38 according to VIVA and one of the 25 ‘women in robotics you need to know about’ — Aimee van Wynsberghe. An inspirational woman whose name even starts with AI…
Thank you to every guest, both men and women, who joined us for the celebration of the underestimated power of every woman in AI! Their efforts are worth acknowledging and promoting. It was our (Women in AI) honor to bring them into spotlight. Thank you dear speakers, for sharing your stories of how it is to be a woman in the Tech world.
Thank you to our partner, L’Oreal, for hosting this prime event and helping Women in AI moving one step closer in achieving our mission! Thank you to Coco Chloë Aarts & Inga Receveur for “lifting up the curtain” on how L’Oreal applies AI to make consumer’s life beautiful. We all loved hearing the practical side of how your various apps work and the culture of innovation at L’Oreal!
The WaiTIME event finished with a video of Maya Angelou reading her poem “Phenomenal Woman”. We would like to share it with you as a reminder of the power and courage that you possess. Because YOU ARE PHENOMENAL!
About Women in AI
Women in AI (WAI // www.womeninai.co) is a nonprofit do-tank working towards gender-inclusive AI that benefits global society. The global organization was founded in 2017 in Paris, France while its Dutch chapter was launched a year later, in 2018. Our mission is to increase female representation and participation in AI. We are a community-driven initiative bringing empowerment, knowledge and active collaboration via education, research, events, and blogging. Our network is 2500+ members from 90+ countries and it is continuously growing.
AI development throughout the years has been mostly led by men. Now, with AI advancing at a high pace and with the applications of AI raising ethical questions, there is a strong need to have both women and men participating alongside each other in building a sustainable, inclusive future. With Women in AI expanding rapidly across the globe, this could become the answer to the global community’s ethical quest for increasing AI fairness.
